Gideon Elementary Play Yard - Philadelphia Public School System

Situated in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood in East Philadelphia, this Community middle school was one of three sites selected for an update to the existing school yards. This project was a part of a wider program in the Philadelphia school district to improve upon the cities storm water management practices.

With a focus on working with the school’s students, teachers and community at large our team received valuable feed back which aided our efforts to create the following conceptual plant for the updated school yard. Through a number of different feedback avenues our proposed design was met with excitement for the next steps as the project moves ahead towards construction in 2026.

Guiding Framework

By overlaying the broken grid of the surrounding community onto the site a spatial arrangement guide was created to allow for design decision making rooted in the place.

Allowing the intersecting lines of the neighborhood to inform decision making in the design process.

A place to live and play.
